I have supported Medecins Sans Frontieres 無國界醫生 for a long time. Now that I have retired, I have more time to contribute to their work in different ways.
Why support charities at all? While you feel good when you donate, does that not let governments off the hook from fulfilling their responsibilities?
Yes I think it is the duty of all governments to provide proper health care for their citizens. However, often in many parts of the world, governments sometimes lose the capacity to do this essential job, for whatever reason. During the past couple of years, the pandemic and the ravages of war continue to cause distress and loss of life in many countries. MSF steps in and makes a huge difference to the lives of those in acute need.
So I thought I would busk for the Hong Kong MSF Day on 7th July 2021. With luck, restrictions on singing in public may be lifted by then, but in any case I can always go online. I have always admired street performers, but this is my very first time doing so! If you have a specific request please let me know. My favourite song is Streets of London. The songwriter Ralph McTell wrote a new verse of his famous song, highlighting how the homeless are much more adversely affected by Covid-19:
"In shop doorways, under bridges, in all our towns and cities
You can glimpse the makeshift bedding from the corner of your eye
Remember what you're seeing barely hides a human being
We're all in this together, brother, sister, you and I.
So how can you tell me you're lonely
And say for you that the sun don't shine
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something, to make you change your mind."
You can follow the guidelines to donate to MSF Hong Kong online, even if you are not in Hong Kong. Please support this cause.
I will post some photos and a youtube link nearer the time to keep you updated.
My Busk for MSF will take place on 7 July 4:30 - 5:30pm. You are cordially invited to come along. Location A is on the pedestrian walkway above street level, opposite the entrance to IFC Mall, at the back of the General Post Office. If I am not at this location, I will have moved to location B, which is between Star Ferry Pier 7 and the Maritime Museum Pier 8, also above street level. If you are unable to come, I will place this on Facebook or YouTube and also share on WhatsApp. Many thanks once again for your interest and support.
