Nine out of ten of the 2.5 million children living with HIV acquired the virus either in utero, during birth or through breastfeeding. But these infections are almost entirely preventable by putting the mother on HIV treatment and the baby on prophylaxis at birth and during breastfeeding.
With access to Anti-Retroviral medicines and appropriate healthcare, approximately 98 percent of children born to women with HIV are born HIV-negative.
